Constrict by KelseyBeckett Constrict by KelseyBeckett
Let me start by saying I am VERY hesitant to post these pictures.
This collection took me months to complete; they're pretty much my babies, and I want to share them with you.
As for how long they'll be up, I'm not sure. I'm very nervous!

PLEASE do not copy/ steal my work. ;__; <33

All are done with Prismacolor colored pencils.

Lemme hear what you think they mean <33

Deceptive in it's simplicity, Constrict is not only well-composed, but sends a subtle, though intensely emotional, message. *neeka's use of severe contrast on colored paper draws the eye to the lighter uplifting parts, only to find a much more macabre undertone. ( Featured by oilsoaked )

this makes me think of a brothel. Perhaps she is a brothel woman with the stairs leading to where her work is done. She is beautiful and seductive but a little sad. The words might be her own thoughts

You asked to hear what we think it means, so I'm taking a shot~
In my opinion, it appears to represent the washing away of sins. The white hair could represent purity, along with the butterflies. The blood would, therefore, have to be the sin, so I think it id likely to be blood from a miscarriage (although her slim form certainly does not suggest a pregnancy, it may explain the loose-fitting shirt) coupled with the fact that her shirt is slightly unbuttoned.

Here's my perspective on what I see from this picture.

This is a representation of the loss of youth, the transition from childhood to womanhood. This is apparent in the contrast of the flowing white hair (old age) and the butterflies (childhood in transition). The woman is wearing a short bathrobe which represents the dullness of everyday life, the loss of idealism and the meeting with reality that many people experience when they come of age--and the water spread throughout the room shows how everyday life can go wrong.

I think I differ from the others' perspectives on one important point. I don't believe the blood between the woman's legs is from menstruation. I believe it is from a miscarriage. Pregnancy has a youth-old age-death-rebirth cycle feeling to it, and a miscarriage means an abrupt stop in this cycle. The woman looks as if she is standing amidst bloody piles on the floor. . .as if she is remembering her past and the tragedies that come with these memories.

All in all, congratulations on getting Dev of the Day. This is one of the best I've seen in a while, and it makes it all the more excellent to have an undercurrent of allegory in its workings.

contrast between purity and impurity.
I see an analogy between the butterflies and the blood (which i interpret as period blood).
um; let me see how i can put this.. butterflies can be regarded as very beautiful and pure beings, but to achieve this they must first go through a process of metamorphosis from being an ugly, mundane worm into a more beautiful being. so something 'impure' becomes ';pure' this way.
now, when the menstruating cycle begins in a woman its something like.. er, 'becoming a woman' and alot of people may view it as impure or disgusting or whatever, but in reality it is just something that reminds us that we are products of nature, ultimately controlled by her, and the human body and how it works is beautiful because of this.
i'm not sure if that's very clear, but its kind of like what i interpreted.

apart from that, the colouring is gorgeous.

Perhaps this piece is about rape, loss of virginity, or the coming to grips of femininity. Its so attractive and beautifully rendered. I absolutely love the ambiguous meaning you have with this piece.

"who can bring what's pure from the impure?"

did you write this?

I think it goes really well, and I see a theme of redemption, maybe Penance.

First of all, I want to say that the skill level here is amazing. When I found out this was just done with colored pencils I was blown away.

What I get from this is is a loss of place- like she once belonged there but something happened that ruined it for her. A point where everything changed.

wow, it took me a while to see the blood. It had a really, what;s the word.... simple, peaceful feeling to it... the blood gives it a message... (haha, i sound like some bum-faced critic! ;p)

what i think.... i think it's an image of how we can think something's pure and innocent, until we have a closer look and find that other, less-innocent being hidden amongst it. kind of like people, I guess...
