The Big Wave by KelseyBeckett The Big Wave by KelseyBeckett
This piece was done for a short story called "The Big wave" By pearl S. Buck. It's a story about how a tidal wave and volcano destroy a town.
We had to make a book cover for it for my editorial painting class.
FIRST TRADITIONAL PAINTING OF THE YEAROMFGBBQ.

I had a great time doing this <3

EDIT: First, let me give a BIG thank you to Deviantart for the Daily Deviation!
Second, let me clarify that this piece in no way depicts the tragedy in Japan. I made this months and months ago in my Editorial class for a book called "The Big Wave."
Once again, this has nothing to do with what happened in Japan. If anything, it's just ironic.

Daily Deviation

Given 2011-03-14
Suggester says: "What drew me to this piece at first was the the face, but then I noticed every thing else around it. I love the story of the volcano and the tidal wave destroying the village. Originally I thought the face was suppose to be a sleeping village being swallowed by the ocean, but then I realized it's Mother Nature created from the waves and the ash."

Hi Kelsey - I've posted your lovely piece on our LitWits Workshops Pinterest board for THE BIG WAVE, with attribution, and have linked it to your gallery on Deviant Art. If you have any objection, of course we will take it down - but people really love it (as do we)! It makes a wonderful "sensory teaching aid" for visually exploring the metaphors in the book, and talking about the relationship between the underworld, the sea, and the land.  Thank you for this beautiful work! You're incredibly gifted!

I love to follow the smoke and waves and see how they become human features in the end, and then zoom out and see the big picture of a slumbering beauty. Gorgeous work.

watermark is a tragic consequence from the DD?

this painting deserved it, with or without the current tragedy. (the DD, not watermark)

Way to predict the devastation in Japan, especially since that volcano went off this morning. Kinda creepy that you were pre-inspired, but I do love the illustration.

No no, really its not the first time this sort of thing has happened and you don't really have a lot of Nuc references which is the worst part of this whole deal. Actually I was kind of wanting to talk to you about it. I'm a ceramic artist and I'm working on first ceramic ball joint doll. I'm considering tattooing said doll with a stylized yakua irezumi (body suit) pertaining to the disaster and I was wondering if I could at least reference your image for the back piece, I'm hoping to donate it to a benefit show and dont mind giving you props for designing that part. It isn't that I couldn't draw my own but yours inspired a lot of emotion when I first saw it so I think it would be the perfect image. Nyway let me know. And don't stop drawing disasters maybe you could do a Nuc going off at Kim Jong Il's house, not that there isn't some warlord general waiting for his turn to step on the necks of North Korea ;p, Lol I've been getting way too political lately.
